Mammals In Akagera National Park- Akagera National park was much affected by the Rwanda genocide. As people fled the war to the neighboring countries such as Burundi and Rwanda, the park was big and flourishing however when the situation established, the refuges or the nationals who had fled returned via the park, and as a result majority never had land, food, and even where today, so they resorted to poaching and doing all the illegal activities within the park and this led to a reduction in the total number of animals. Even the government had no enough land where they would have housed all the numbers of refugees returning and they decided to allocated half of the park to the people to settle and carry out various activities. Some animals became extinct and the park was replaced now by domesticated animals. The government of Rwanda used the remaining half of the park to protect the remained wildlife animals.

Animals in Akagera national park harbors numerous species of wildlife animals including giraffes, buffaloes, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, hyenas, topi, waterbuck, Impala, Duiker, lions, Hyenas, zebras, klipspringer, Oribis, and the cape eland which is regarded as the largest antelope. While in Akagera National park, tourists can also mammals like see hippos, crocodile’s which are found in Lake Ihema. Primates such as olive baboons, Vervet Monkeys, blue monkeys, and bushbabies can also be seen in this park.

Birds in Akagera National Park

The conducive environment in Akagera National Park provides habitat to over 500 species of birds located within the park. The bird species have been increasing steadily since the status of the park was changed. The birds inhabit the areas such as savannah plains, papyrus, and swamps. Travelers can spot the shoebill and the papyrus Gonolek during g the safari boat cruise. Visitors will be able to see cormorants, crowned cranes, Herons, and marabou stork among others. Other bird species include Kingfisher, Senegal Lapwings, Squacco Herons, African Openbill stock, Grey Crowned Crane, African Darter, Long-toed and Water Thick-knee, Black-headed and Viellot’s Black Weavers, Grey-backed Fiscals, Fan-tailed Widowbird, and Caruthers Cisticola.
