How to access Mgahinga gorilla National Park? The park can be accessed by using both air and road transport for a number of activities. You need to book accommodation in Mgahinga in advance to avoid disappointment.

By road transport

To get Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, you will drive from Kampala city which is Uganda’s capital city and you drive westwards to Masaka, Mbarara, Kabale, and then to Kisoro districts and finally to Mgahinga gorilla National Park Headquarters. The journey covers above 509 kilometers and it takes about 9 to 10 hours. On this route to Mgahinga National Park, you can make a stopover at the equator line at Kayabwe for photos and craft shopping, Lake Mburo National Park for a boat cruise or horseback riding or games drives or you can make a stopover at Igongo Cultural center for lunch6 before they proceed to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for Gorilla trekking.

The journey is long but it offers a rewarding experience to visitors in that you will have great views of several Ankole homesteads, local people, cattle farms, plantation farms, and several curved and step hills like those of Kigezi hills that should make your journey so successful. You can as well use public means of transport to access Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. You can board a bus from Kampala then it stops you in Kisoro town and you hire a special taxi to park headquarters at Ntebeko though this is not recommended as it tends to delay and sometimes you might be overcharged. By air transport

The flights are organized from Entebbe or Kajjansi airstrip to Kisoro airstrip. Flights start early in the morning at around 8 am and it takes about 1 hour to land at Kisoro Airstrip.

Tourists can also access Mgahinga Gorilla National Park via Rwanda and surprisingly this the easiest and the shortest route to access the park. After landing at Kigali International airport in Rwanda, tourists will connect to Mgahinga through the Cyanika border through road transport and finally link to Ntebeko Park headquarters. It takes about 4 hours’ drive and this presents the shortest way to access Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
