Main Route and Highway Connection

Travelers heading to the park will use the Kampala–Masaka–Mbarara highway, a well-maintained tarmac road that connects Uganda’s central region to the west. Key Entry Gates into the Park

There are two main gates used to enter Lake Mburo National Park: Sanga Gate and Nshara Gate. If you are traveling directly from Kampala, the more suitable option is Sanga Gate, which is accessed by turning off the main road at the town of Lyantonde. Lyantonde is a lively roadside stop with basic amenities, ideal for a quick break before entering the park.

If you’re approaching from the Mbarara side, which lies west of the park, then Nshara Gate is your best option. This gate is located just before reaching Mbarara, making it another convenient access point for visitors from western Uganda.

After turning off the main highway at either Lyantonde (for Sanga Gate) or just before Mbarara (for Nshara Gate). It’s a short drive of less than 20 kilometers to reach the park entrance. These connecting roads are mostly dirt tracks but are generally passable throughout the year. Experts recommend a 4×4 vehicle during the rainy season for a smoother and safer ride.

Access Lake Mburo National Park by Air Transport

By public transport

Public transport to Lake Mburo National Park is available but less recommended due to limited direct access. Travelers can board a bus or shared taxi from Kampala to Mbarara. From Sanga, visitors must hire a boda-boda (motorcycle taxi) or arrange a private vehicle to reach the park entrance.
